Trend Watch: Four Ways to Do Teal

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Teal is a hot color for fall.

Not only is it cute for late summer, but it’s a jewel tone, which makes it transition well into the fall.

But how to accessorize — that is the question. And, of course, we have options for you!

Let’s start with this teal Loeffler Randall dress.

Loeffler Randall Layered Sleeve Dress
Loeffler Randall Layered Sleeve Dress, $375 at activeendeavors.com.

What can we do to make this adorable dress even more adorable? Well, let’s see…

1. Go for the Gold

Guess by Marciano Pale Gold Gothic G Bangle Set, $30 at guess.com.

You’re sure to look like a winner when you pair teal with gold. The glint of gold at the wrist gives a touch of complexity to this dress and keeps it from looking too simple, while maintaining a classic feel.

2. Cool It

Marjorie Baer Oval Egg Drop Earrings, $42 at nordstrom.com.

The cool tones of these silver earrings give a cool tone to this outfit — a modern twist on a simple dress.

3. Girl Power

10K White Gold Diamond-Accented Emerald-Cut Pink Topaz Pendant Necklace, $172.54 at target.com.

Pink topaz adds a feminine touch to this dress, while also presenting a pleasant contrast between a jewel tone and a pastel.

4. Clash of the Titans

Bounkit for Vivre Double Strand Coral Necklace, $745 at vivre.com.

These colors may not seem to match at first glance, but since orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel, pairing coral and teal makes a bold statement.

If you’re ready for fall and the bold colors that it brings, then you’re probably as excited about teal as I am! I hope that this guide gives you the courage to wear this beautiful jewel tone in a way that makes you shine like the beautiful jewel that you are.

Feelin’ Teal,
Olivia

My Favorite Things: Iosselliani

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Lately, I have just been LOVING Iosselliani.

Iosselliani Panther Ring
Iosselliani Panther Ring, $265 at barneys.com.

Besides the Investment Piece for September’s birthstone (the sapphire), Iosselliani’s current line includes this Panther Ring, which I just love — I would imagine that it would make the wearer feel all lithe and feline and predatory — wait, does that make me a cougar? ;)

In any case, that’s just the tip of the Iossberg (ha, ha. Get it?). Iosselliani’s current line features a lot of inspiration from nature: specifically, panthers and snakes. The design is straight from the Amazon, in all its fierce, dangerous beauty.

In a dog-eat-dog world like ours, we Woobies need a little something to give us that extra mental boost, and these predatory pieces remind us that we are the hunter, not the hunted.

Hey, it’s a jungle out there.

Wildly,
Olivia

Have you ever picked up a piece of jewelry that you liked and wondered what in your closet it would go with?

Well, thanks to the creators of Polyvore.com, you don’t have to wonder anymore.

“Blinged Out” by Olivia

Here’s a set that I put together around this Miu Miu LBD. I just started with the dress, added some hot red shoes, and added jewelry to my heart’s content. Finish off with a cute zebra clutch and voila! eLivia is ready for a night on the town! I can’t wait to create more “fantasy” (read: things I could never afford) outfits for myself!

And for those who have trouble with their own wardrobes, you can clip any image, so you can even take pictures of your own clothes and work with what’s already in your closet. It’s a great way to cure the “I have nothing to wear” blues.

Polyvore is a great tool for figuring out what looks good together and what doesn’t. Not that I ever have that problem, myself. ;)

Always Put Together,
Olivia

Birthstone for September: Sapphire

Monday, September 8th, 2008

If your birthday is in September, then your birthstone is the sapphire!

 Sapphire

Blue is my favorite color and I was always jealous that my sister’s birthday is in September because sapphire is her birthstone. And it’s no wonder; with its deep blue hue, it’s one of the most popular and widely known gemstones in the world.

Sapphire is a gem-quality form of the mineral corundum. Rubies (the July birthstone!) are actually a form of the same mineral! While rubies get their color from chromium, sapphires are pure aluminum oxide. Not all sapphires are blue, however. Some contain trace amounts of iron, titanium and chromium, which can produce a whole spectrum of colors in the sapphire family!

Star of India
The Star of India

The largest cut sapphire in the world is the Star of India, which is a star sapphire. Star sapphires have needle-like inclusions that cause a six-rayed “star” to appear when the gem is viewed under a single overhead light source. The Star of India weighs in at a whopping 563.35 carats.

Sapphire has such a classic feel to it, so it’s an easy choice for an accessory. Here are three ways to wear this gem of a gem!

Affordable Accent

Target Sterling Silver Genuine Sapphire and Diamond Earrings
Target Sterling Silver Genuine Sapphire and Diamond Earrings, $29.99 at target.com.

These sapphire earrings have a high-society feel at a flea-market price! Gotta love that about Target. These earrings would be the perfect touch for a special evening out; they could lend depth to a flirty cocktail dress.

The Investment Piece

Iosselliani Triple Ring
Iosselliani Triple Ring, $795 at barneys.com.

This handmade ring is a great modern take on the sapphire. It’s great for adding a little edge to an otherwise tame ensemble. It shows that there’s more to the wearer than meets the eye.

Living in Luxury

Tiffany & Co. Victoria Pendant
Tiffany & Co. Victoria Pendant, $3,925 at tiffany.com.

If you’re going to do sapphire, do it up right. This classic design by Tiffany & Co. is sapphire as it was intended to be: the glorious centerpiece of a pendant, flanked by diamonds. You want elegance? Nobody does it better than Tiffany & Co.

So whether you’re just looking for the easiest way to represent your birth month or trying to make a loud and proud statement about it, there are plenty of ways to do it and make it your own!

Happy birthday, you September Sapphires! May your jewelry should be the only thing about you that’s blue.

Truly Bluely,
Olivia

Trend Watch: Brooch the Subject

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Brooches: they’re not just for grandmas and librarians anymore.

The brooch used to be the favorite accessory of the stuffy and hopelessly out-of-touch, but it’s making a comeback. Now, it’s used to give modern outfits a classic vibe, or even to add edge to a casual ensemble.

Here are five different brooches to wear in five different situations:

1. Class is in Session

NY & Co. City Style Black Rose Pin
New York & Company City Style Black Rose Pin, $14.95 at nyandcompany.com.

This classic floral brooch is a great way to liven up an ordinary cardigan twinset. An outfit like this just screams “Jackie Kennedy.”

2. You Gotta Have Faith

Dillard's The Vatican Library Collection Angel Brooch
Dillard’s The Vatican Library Collection Angel Brooch, $28 at dillards.com.

Wear your faith on your sleeve… or lapel, as the case may be. This beautifully crafted brooch is an elegant way to set off your Sunday best!

3. I’ve Got the Power

Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. Sapphire and Diamond Starfish Brooch
Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. Sapphire and Diamond Starfish Brooch, $63,000 at tiffany.com.

This dazzling brooch could put the “power” in “power suit.” Its feminine design serves to soften the edges of a menswear-inspired suit, but make no mistake about it: this brooch oozes self-confidence and strength.

4. We Got the Funk

Ann Taylor Purple Cluster Brooch
Ann Taylor Purple Cluster Brooch, $48 at anntaylor.com.

This funky brooch can take a cocktail dress from “simple” to “unique” in seconds flat! Even a classic LBD needs help from time to time to keep it from getting stale.

5. We Will, We Will Rock You

Too Faced Avant Guard Beauty Brooch
Too Faced Avant Guard Beauty Brooch, $28.50 at drugstore.com.

Who says that brooches have to be elegant? This brooch by cosmetic line Too Faced lends a rocker’s edge to a simple casual outfit — black t-shirt and jeans, anyone? Also, the faux cameo hides a pot of lip gloss so that your lips shine as you belt out your favorite rock anthem.

I hope that you can see now that there’s a brooch for everyone. No matter your style, from classic to goth, there’s bound to be a brooch for you.

Universally,
Olivia

My Favorite Things: Apple Jewelry

Monday, September 1st, 2008

It’s Labor Day: the last holiday before the school year for many students out there.

While students and teachers alike are dragging their feet and groaning about school supplies and mourning the end of the carefree summer days, I’m actually rather excited about back to school fashion.

They say that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but I’ve been thinking that they should change that to “an apple a day keeps the teacher at bay.”

Here are a few gifts that you can hand to your new teacher to get on her good side.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Apple Pendant Watch
Marc by Marc Jacobs Apple Pendant Watch, $150 at dillards.com.

If you’ve been reading our Bling Blog for any amount of time, you know that Olivia loves pendant watches. This cute li’l Marc by Marc Jacobs watch is adorable AND functional! Just like your teacher!

31 Corn Lane Solid Red Apple Ring

For teachers with a funkier side, this chunky acrylic apple is sure to please!

Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co. Five-Apple Bracelet
Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co. Five-Apple Bracelet, $315 at tiffany.com.

If your teacher enjoys the finer things in life, she’s sure to appreciate this modern bracelet by Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co. It’ll show her that you have good taste, too.

Ickynicks School Book Red Apple Earrings
Ickynicks School Book Red Apple Earrings, $6.50 at ickynicks.com.

And for the teacher who loves to teach, these school book apples are a great way for her to showcase her excitement for the coming new year!

And who says that only students can buy gifts for teachers? If you’re a teacher, gift yourself! You’re going to need something pretty to keep your spirits up in the weeks to come. ;)

Studiously,
Olivia
