Designer Profile: John S. Brana Distinctive Jewelry

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

A Jewelry Designer at Home

John S. Brana, jewelry designer, artist, and San Francisco resident.

John S. Brana is Northern California.

His jewelry design reflects the heavy arts culture of the area. He gets his inspiration from the nature that surrounds him in his natural habitat. Even some of the names of his design lines are taken from famous neighborhoods and regions of the San Francisco Bay Area – he pays homage to Pacific Heights, Sea Cliff, and even SoMa.

The resulting pieces are an amazingly accurate representation of the designer, as well as the homeland that he holds so near and dear to his heart.

The Bold and the Beautiful: Kenneth Jay Lane

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

You’d have to love chunky to love the bold designs of Kenneth Jay Lane, and I don’t mean Jennifer Hudson. Shoot, can’t say that this month, huh? Then how about Callie from Grey’s Anatomy?

A little bit Dynasty, a little bit rock n’ roll, these make fantastic, attention-getting statement pieces. Alexis would be proud.

Bracelets and Rings and Necklaces, Oh, My! All come with a very reasonable price tag.

East Meets West, Part III: An Interview with Rita Chung of Asian2Woman

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

(Be sure to catch Part I and Part II of the interview!)

One day, Rita Chung was signing up for a new e-mail account. The username she wanted, asianchica (many of her friends call her “chica”), was already taken. So was her next choice, asianwoman. So was asian1woman. Can you guess where she went next?

Rita’s always been a people person. She loves getting to know new people, as well as keeping up with old friends. Her people skills often help her to stay on the cutting edge of her trade.

Take for example, the way she learned to tie Chinese knots: she was running a production house in the early 2000s, and she needed to find some corporate gifts. She found a place that made Chinese gift baskets tied with Chinese knots, and quickly made friends with the people who made the baskets. She was inspired to create jewelry from these decorative tassels, and offered to buy lunch for anyone who could teach her how to tie them. They quickly jumped to the task, and Rita was soon tying her own knots for jewelry that she would design and make herself.

The designer wears her own jade necklace and carries an evening bag of her own design.

She also knows a certain Mr. Kung in China. He’s known in Hong Kong as The King of Jade (I like to think of him as “King Kung” — heehee!). She confessed to me that she doesn’t know all of the specific details about the different kinds of jade (although she does know plenty) — but Mr. Kung knows all there is to know. He carves all of her jade for her.

IMG_0490
Jade lends substance and dignity to everyday silver hoops.

And she doesn’t stop at jewelry, either — she also designs evening bags (see above) and is working on an exclusive line of kimono accessories for a boutique in Tokyo, Japan. I’m sure that she’s already made friends with half of Tokyo.

And it’s no wonder that she has so many friends — she’s got such a magnetic personality! Much like jade, her favorite material to work with, she’s beautiful, mysterious, and high-energy. It has been our pleasure to get to know this lively woman, and we look forward to seeing what she cooks up in the future.

Enthusiastically,
Olivia

East Meets West, Part II: An Interview with Rita Chung of Asian2Woman

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

(Catch Part I of the interview here.)

IMG_0483
Jewelry designer Rita Chung of Asian2Woman models her own jade necklace.

Rita’s style is quite conservative; she wears mostly black. She prefers to shape her style with jewelry rather than clothes (her favorite designer is Bulgari — she wears a Bulgari bracelet on her left wrist). But this vivacious Asian beauty makes up for her understated look with her over-the-top personality!

Rita gets inspiration for her pieces from sources as varied as nature, her gut instinct, and the material itself. She says that most of her pieces are conservative with a wild streak — just like her.

Her favorite materials are jade, freshwater pearls, and Chinese knots hand-tied with silk thread. “Jade is a high-energy stone,” she enthuses, “so I can work with it for hours and not get tired! I just go nuts!”

IMG_0484
Rita wears a jade necklace of her own design.

One of Rita’s most impressive pieces is a necklace that boasts an enormous pendant of two interlocking Chinese horses carved from a single piece of show jade. Rita knows her stuff when it comes to jade. She knows that the best imperial jade comes from Burma. But she likes the versatility that comes from working with “new” jade from China. It can be color-enhanced to attain the look of imperial jade, and it’s much more affordable.

She also works exclusively with freshwater pearls because she’s committed to quality.

Rita loves contradictions; she loves mixing colors; east meets west; old meets new; conservative meets that wild streak of hers. The results of her efforts are not a clash of opposites, but a harmonious melding of worlds.

And I love that she does the chunky trend so well!

Her pieces are substantial without overwhelming the wearer; they make a statement without beating you over the head with it — in short, chunky, but not clunky.

IMG_0481
Rita’s friend Nancy wears Asian2Woman jade and pearl earrings.

Rita’s design began with creating jewelry for her friends and family, and flourished with their encouragement. Her greatest joy still lies in creating custom pieces for her friends. Nancy, our gracious hostess, doesn’t have pierced ears, so Rita makes pieces for her on a chain that Nancy can hang on her existing clip-on earrings.

Rita’s nature shines through in her designs: like her, they are generous, warm, intriguing, and sensual.

Tune in tomorrow for the last installment of our fabulous interview with this fabulous designer!

Enamored,
Olivia

East Meets West: An Interview with Rita Chung of Asian2Woman

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

We here at WooMeOver first met Rita Chung at the Pasadena Bead and Design Show back in August. We loved her sophisticated designs and her vivacious personality so much that we did a profile of her. And then we had so much fun with that that we jumped at the opportunity to sit down and interview her!

IMG_0482
The designer, right, at the home of her friend Nancy (left).

I met Rita at the home of a friend of hers in Southern California. Nancy had just thrown a huge Halloween/birthday party, and a houseful of decorations remained to testify to the party’s success.

Nancy insisted on feeding me (she does grill up a mean panini) and the ladies regaled me with tales of the previous evening’s party. The jewel of the evening was when Nancy’s neighbors called the police to complain about the noise, and the person who got the door thought that the policeman was there for the party. “Great costume!” she enthused. Then, after the officer explained his purpose for coming, Nancy reassured him that they’d turn down the music (well, as much as you can turn down a live band) — “And if we don’t,” she promised the officer, “you can come right back and take my husband to jail. He’s already dressed for it.” Her husband Peter was dressed as a jailbird.

“What did you dress up as?” asked our innocent Olivia.

Rita gave me a wicked grin. “A Shanghai whore,” she airily replied. Oh, Rita, behave!

After my unexpected (but heartily welcomed and enjoyed) brunch, I sat down with Rita to get the skinny on her.

IMG_0485

In order to tell the story of Rita’s brand, Asian2Woman, we have to tell the story of Rita Chung. And in order to tell the story of Rita Chung, we have to go back to the beginning.

Rita was born in Macau, China. She finished grade school in Taipei, Taiwan, but returned to Macau to finish high school. She then studied Hotel Management in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she then lived for 20 years.

She has an impressive background in the service industry, which opened the door for her in other areas, such as public relations and marketing. She’s worked for hotels, companies, magazines — she even co-hosted a talk show in Macau and wrote a book (called Girls on Top — how apropos for Rita!).

So how did this corporate go-getter become a designer?

Rita has loved designing since childhood — she was always designing clothing, jewelry, and everything else in between. She told me that she would tell her tailor exactly what she wanted him to do, and, pretty soon, she’d see people copying what she had done. She was ten years old.

Her mother was a connoisseur of fine jewelry, and “it’s easy in Macau to find a goldsmith to make what you design,” Rita informed me.

After living the corporate life in Hawaii and China, Rita settled down permanently (well, as settled as a whirlwind like our girl can get) in San Francisco and began considering what sort of career to pursue in her new home.

Like a bolt from the blue, she thought it might be possible to turn her passion for design into a career. She did the research and decided that her dream was achievable. She launched Asian2Woman in 2005 and hasn’t looked back since.

Tune in tomorrow for more of Rita’s journey as a designer and businesswoman!

Intrigued,
Olivia

The company’s story is a fascinating read. From the website:

“Love Heals Jewelry is a mother son and daughter team of Adriana, Gunnar and Elisa. We make our jewelry on our family hippy commune and organic farm in Ojai California inside a 30 food Geodesic dome.

As a young woman, Adriana fled a dangerous military dictatorship in Argentina for London, where she began supporting herself as an artist selling her jewelry on Portobello Rd. Her roaming gypsy spirit took her around Europe - she settled in Ibiza - where she gave birth to Gunnar, in a 400 year-old house with no electricity, running water, car or stores within many miles. In 1979, the family relocated to Santa Barbara, California.”
